Edward Wellman Serrell

Edward W. Serrell was my Great-G-G-Grandfather, on my mother's side (Helen Elizabeth Serrell). In 1861, Serrell was authorized to create this regiment (1st New York Volunteers) which was later dubbed as 'Serrell's Engineers!'

Would be interested in sharing any information about this regiment, including their role in constructing the 'Swamp Angel' cannon battery and subsequent bombardment of Charleston in 1863.

Ashbel Hibbard Whelden

Ashbel Whelden was a private in Co. B Unassigned Pennsylvania Volunteers from August 9, 1862 until June 5, 1863. Enlisted in Co. C 1st New York Engineers February 9, 1864 and discharged July 19, 1865 at Hilton Head South Carlolina. He was born August 7, 1843 in Washington County New York. He resided at Warren County, PA after the war; moved to Minnesota in 1868; moved to Wisconsin in 1869; moved to Portland, OR in 1899. He listed his occupation on entering the service as a farmer. He was 5' 9 1/2' tall. He was commander of the G.A.R Post at Superior Wisconsin. He was a member of Post #22 in Portland, OR. He married Clara Emma Porter August 7, 1876. He died in Portland, OR on August 15, 1913. He is buried at Greenhill Cemetery G.A.R. in Portland, OR.

Henry Puryea

Henry was born in New York, survived the Civil War, married and settled in Gunnison, Colorado. Later he and his brother Peter went west to California. Henry raised olives in Bonsil and Peter raised walnuts in Glendale. Henry died in San Diego.
